Two of a Kind is a 1983 American romantic fantasy crime comedy moving picture directed by John Herzfeld and starring John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John. The film reunited Travolta and Newton-John who had appeared together in 1978's Grease.[1] The original musical score was composed past Patrick Williams. Travolta plays a cash-strapped inventor while Newton-John plays the bank teller whom he attempts to rob. They must come to prove compassion for one some other in lodge to delay God'southward judgment upon the Earth. Despite beingness a critical failure, the film'southward soundtrack was a commercial success, yielding iii hit singles for Newton-John and being certified Platinum.
Plot [edit]
Iv angels; Charlie (Charles Durning), Earl (Scatman Crothers), Gonzales (Castulo Guerra), and Ruth (Beatrice Straight); take been in charge of Heaven for the final xx-five years. They are playing a golf match in Sky when their game is interrupted by God (voiced past Gene Hackman), who has returned to the office and does not similar what he sees downwards on Globe. God wants to club up some other flood and start all over again (despite his hope in the rainbow that he never would over again), but the four angels persuade him to reconsider, reasoning that, if a typical World human being can reform, information technology would prove that all flesh is capable of information technology.
God agrees to the scheme, and the typical Earth man selected by the angels is Zack Melon (John Travolta); a failed inventor who, threatened by loan sharks, decides to hold upwards a bank. Zack points his gun at banking company teller Debbie Wylder (Olivia Newton-John), who ostensibly gives him all the money. All the same, when Zack peers into the sack later on the robbery, he sees that Debbie has substituted bank deposit slips for the greenbacks and has kept the money for herself. Zack tracks her down to repossess his stolen money. While dodging the loan sharks and the evil interventions of the Devil (Oliver Reed), the two come to develop a romantic relationship which is put to the test when the two are threatened by a masked thug.

Filming [edit]
The film was originally called Second Chance and was to exist directed by Richard Rush.[2]
Principal photography of Two of a Kind took place from May nine to July 21, 1983, outset in New York City with ii weeks of location shooting and then standing in California at 20th Century Play tricks Studios in Century City, MGM Studios in Culver City and The Burbank Studios in Burbank.[3] [ane] The heaven scene was shot on MGM's Stage 27.[i]
Newton-John recorded a song "Twist of Fate" which was played over the cease credits. It proved and then popular on radio that release of the moving-picture show was delayed to redo the film's soundtrack.[4]

Roger Ebert gave the film one-and-a-half stars out of four and wrote, "The romance, alas, never really gets airborne, if merely considering Travolta, Newton-John and the plot are followed everywhere by countless unnecessary supporting characters."[five] Janet Maslin of The New York Times asked, "Can it actually have been that hard to detect a passable screen vehicle for John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John? Whatever old romantic fluff should accept sufficed, and yet something equally horrible as 'Two of a Kind' has been tailor-made for its stars. The results are so disastrous that absolutely no one is shown off to skilful advantage, with the possible exception of the hairdressers involved."[6] Todd McCarthy of Variety slammed the pic every bit "an embarrassment of the showtime society ... Aside from the presence of the two stars, confection has all the earmarks of a bargain-basement job."[vii]
Factor Siskel of the Chicago Tribune gave the pic two-and-a-half stars out of iv and wrote that director John Herzfeld "has placed one of America's favorite fantasy couples in a gimmick-filled story that requires the almost-constant presence of seven of the dullest supporting characters you'll ever meet. That's too bad, considering whenever Newton-John and Travolta are on screen together, '2 of a Kind' flashes with a spark of entertainment, and you want to tell them to get up and go to another film where they can accept a long talk or makeout scene together."[8]
Sheila Benson of the Los Angeles Times said that with "flaccid direction, ugly photography and performances that rely on charm generated a few movies ago (and sealed in plastic), you lot have reason enough to give 'Ii of a Kind' a broad berth."[9] Rita Kempley of The Washington Post wrote, "The acting's not all that bad, merely the script is."[10]
Filmink mag subsequently wrote the 2 stars "really shouldn't have been then snobby about Grease 2 if this is what they did instead."[11]
Two of a Kind was nominated for v Razzie Awards: Worst Role player (Travolta, also for Staying Alive), Worst Extra (Newton-John), Worst Manager (Herzfeld), Worst Screenplay, and Worst Picture. The moving-picture show was nominated for a Stinkers Bad Picture show Honour for Worst Picture.[12]
Equally of February 2020, the film holds an eighteen% rating on Rotten Tomatoes based on 11 reviews.[13]
Soundtrack [edit]
The film was salvaged past a platinum soundtrack which yielded three singles for Newton-John:

The album was further bolstered by featuring "Ask the Lone", a song which the stone group Journey had initially intended for their 1983 anthology Frontiers but which was only bachelor on the soundtrack anthology, and Patti Austin'due south "Information technology'southward Gonna Be Special", which was not a major popular hit but peaked at #fifteen on the R&B charts and #5 on the Dance charts in 1984.
